Works Synopsis

This photo series of “Tribute to Classic Paintings by Cézanne”is based on classic still-life paintings of the French Post-Impressionist pioneer Paul Cézanne, recreating traditional painting with modern elements to address the most concerning global social issue, exploring artistic expression through the medium of photography to revitalize the life of traditional oil paintings. It is a bold statement of contemporary Chinese photographers on cultural confidence. To recreate on the classic works is not to simply copy the originals, but to innovate and give new meaning to them. Plastic wrap and little blue flowers are evident in every photo of the whole series, which are symbols of contemporary elements through which the photographer is sending messages about food safety such as plastic pollution and transgenosis technology in the food industry, transforming the traditional classic oil paintings into contemporary photographic works with the significance of the times. “Tribute to Classic Paintings by Cézanne” allows the viewers to review the classic works and at the same time to provoke thoughts on the content of each frame and re-examine the classics with a contemporary perspective. When going through the series, it is open to interpretations of each viewer based on their own thoughts and understandings.
